With decades of international experience, STRABAG International delivers tunnel construction and underground works for transport, energy and infrastructure projects worldwide.
Our services range from conventional and mechanised tunnelling to pipe jacking, microtunnelling, waterproofing and shaft construction.
Services in Tunnelling
Mechanised Tunnelling
We deliver mechanised tunnelling projects using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and shield machines in hard rock, soft ground and other challenging geological conditions. Depending on the project-specific and geological requirements, we deploy a range of TBM technologies, including Earth Pressure Balance (EPB), slurry shield and other pressure-controlled tunnelling systems.
Conventional Tunnelling
Tunnel construction using drill-and-blast methods, mechanical excavation equipment and conventional tunnelling techniques such as the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).
Our services include excavation, material handling and the installation of primary ground support systems, including steel ribs, lattice girders, rock and soil anchors, and sprayed concrete lining.
Pipe Jacking and Microtunnelling
We have more than 40 years of experience in pipe jacking and microtunnelling. Our services cover the trenchless installation of pipelines and underground infrastructure under a wide range of geological and spatial conditions. We employ advanced microtunnel boring machines (MTBMs) and specialised pipe jacking systems to meet project-specific requirements. An in-house precast pipe manufacturing facility in Malaysia supports our projects with high-quality products and a reliable supply chain.
Pipe jacking and microtunnelling are used for a wide range of underground infrastructure applications, including water and wastewater systems, pipeline crossings, energy infrastructure, utility networks and culverts.
Waterproofing
Installation of waterproofing systems and tunnel waterproofing solutions as part of underground construction projects and long-term asset protection. We offer installation services for waterproofing in accordance with current technical standards and high-quality lining systems worldwide.
As a certified installer, we create impermeable barriers that prevent water intrusion in all kinds of infrastructures, environmental protection, water management and roofing systems.
Shaft Construction
Construction of vertical tunnel shafts and access structures is necessary for underground construction projects. Depending on project requirements and geological conditions, we use shaft sinking methods, raise boring and TBM-based solutions.
Raise boring is used for deep shafts in stable ground and can achieve diameters of up to 6 m and depths exceeding 1,000 m, while shaft sinking methods are applied where depths are limited and geological conditions are less stable. We also provide inclined shaft TBM tunnelling for hydropower and infrastructure projects, ensuring efficient excavation and integration into tunnel systems and underground works.

Get in touchFAQs
-
When should a tunnel boring machine (TBM) be used?
TBMs are generally preferred for long tunnels with consistent geological conditions, high production requirements and minimal surface disruption needs. Conventional methods such as drill and blast may be suitable for shorter tunnels or highly variable grounds.
-
Which tunnelling methods does STRABAG provide?
STRABAG offers both conventional and mechanised tunnelling methods. Depending on the project requirements and ground conditions, we use techniques such as the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), drill-and-blast excavation, roadheaders and tunnel boring machines (TBM
-
What types of tunnels does STRABAG construct?
We construct railway tunnels, road tunnels, hydropower tunnels, water and wastewater tunnels, and other infrastructure tunnels. Our expertise also includes shafts, access tunnels and related underground structures.
-
Can any tunnelling method be used for every project?
No. The most suitable method depends on the ground conditions and project requirements. We select the appropriate approach, including TBMs, NATM and drill-and-blast excavation.
-
Do you build tunnels worldwide?
Yes. STRABAG delivers tunnelling projects across different markets in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
