West Silver Basin Dam and Reservoir
United States of America
Construction of the asphalt concrete core of a rockfill dam.
The project is located in Morenci, Arizona, within a copper mining area. The existing Silver Basin Reservoir required the construction of a replacement reservoir which is located higher in the watershed, west of the existing reservoir. This new basin serves as a reservoir for the copper mine.
STRABAG International was awarded the contract for the construction of an asphalt concrete core for the new rockfill dam, built in parallel by a local construction company.
The dam has a height of 38.40 m and nearly 20,000 tonnes of asphalt concrete were required for the asphalt core. The new basin has a storage capacity of 4,360,000 m³.
The project was handed over to the client by the end of 2018 after a construction time of 18 months.
