Doubling rail capacity between Oslo and Bergen
Bergen has been connected to the Norwegian rail network by the eight-kilometre-long, single-track Ulriken Tunnel since the 1960s.
The construction of a parallel second single-track tunnel significantly increased line capacity to accommodate growing freight traffic between Oslo and Bergen, as well as increasing commuter traffic from the surrounding eastern region.
In addition to the excavation of the entire tunnel, the contract included the construction of a branch cavern with an excavation cross-section of more than 280 square metres, the excavation of 16 cross-passages to the existing railway tunnel while it remained in operation, and the construction of a new railway bridge support structure approximately eighty metres in length.
