Advance Tunneling Scarborough Subway Extension
Canada
STRABAG, through its Canadian subsidiary, was awarded the tunnelling contract for the extension of the Scarborough Subway (Line 2) in Toronto. The approximately € 500 million (CAN 757 million) project was tendered as a design-build-finance model. Work started in 2021 and should be completed by autumn 2024.
“This contract is one of a series of major infrastructure projects that we are realising in Toronto. We are delighted that we were able to score again with our tunnelling expertise, which we are currently also using for a pumping station and a railway tunnel,” explained Thomas Birtel, then CEO of STRABAG SE.
Contract model creates added value for the province
STRABAG was awarded the contract by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx through a public procurement process. Evaluation criteria included design and construction methodology, project management approach and collaborative behaviour of key team members.
The 7.8 km extension runs entirely underground, connecting the existing Kennedy Station terminus with Sheppard Avenue/McCowan Road. The contract award included a launch shaft, a reception shaft, five headwalls for future stations and 14 headwalls for rescue shafts. A tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 11.87 metres was foreseen for the tunnel.
