Niagara Tunnel Facility Project
Canada
The Niagara Tunnel Facility project was awarded to STRABAG through its Canadian subsidiary and was the initial key project in the Canadian market. The € 728 million (CAD 980 million) project was tendered as a design-build model. Work started in 2005, reaching substantial completion in 2013.
The 10.4 km long water conveyance tunnel measures 13 m wide and was built 140 m below the hard rock under the city of Niagara Falls to better utilise the Niagara River for electricity generation. Due to the extremely difficult geological conditions, STRABAG utilized a tunnel boring machine (TBM) that is still one of the largest hard rock TBMs in the world.
The Tunnelling Association of Canada (TAC) named the Niagara Tunnel Project the Canadian Project of the Year for 2013. This prestigious award recognizes the project’s groundbreaking achievements, overcoming numerous challenges and mastering difficult tasks.
