Award-winning underground infrastructure beneath Niagara Falls
The Niagara Tunnel Facility Project marked STRABAG's successful entry into the Canadian market and remains one of the company's most significant international tunnelling achievements. Over a period of eight years, STRABAG delivered a major water conveyance tunnel beneath the city of Niagara Falls, creating critical infrastructure to increase the efficiency of hydroelectric power generation from the Niagara River.
Excavation of the 10,4-kilometre-long tunnel presented exceptional technical challenges. Driven through hard rock at depths of up to 140 metres, the project required the deployment of one of the world's largest hard-rock tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to successfully manage the demanding geological conditions while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
The project's technical complexity, innovative execution and successful delivery were recognised by the Tunnelling Association of Canada (TAC), which named the Niagara Tunnel Facility Canadian Project of the Year 2013. Today, the tunnel stands as a landmark example of modern underground construction and tunnelling expertise.
