Metro Algiers, Line 1, Extension C: El Harrach

Algeria

The contract included the construction of a 3 km metro line including a 2.4 km tunnel, two stations, one bridge and several ventilation buildings. This section extends the metro line from El Harrach to Ain Naadja 2. The construction works lasted 44 months and took place on a total length of three kilometres.

The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) was used for the tunnelling works. Since the city of Algiers features varying geological conditions, this flexible method was preferred to using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Another reason for this decision was the relatively short length of the relevant sections. The two stations were built in open cut and partially under top cover.
