Hatta Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant

Sustainable hydropower infrastructure supporting Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy

The Hatta Pumped Storage Hydropower Station is located in the Hajar Mountains near the community of Hatta, approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Dubai. The project forms a key component of Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and is the first pumped storage hydropower facility in the Gulf region.

The scheme utilises the existing Saad Hatta Al Awwal Dam as the lower reservoir, while a newly constructed upper reservoir is situated approximately 150 metres above. The two reservoirs are connected by a pressure tunnel system feeding an underground powerhouse equipped with two generating units delivering a total installed capacity of 250 MW over a six-hour generation cycle.

Scope of Work

• Construction of the pumped storage hydropower plant Hatta 
• Construction of the upper reservoir using two roller-compacted concrete dams  
• Excavation and construction of a pressure tunnel system approximately 1,3 km in length 
• Construction of an underground powerhouse housing two generating units 
• Construction of two road tunnels of approximately 470 m and 440 m length using drill-and-blast excavation methods 
• Construction of ancillary buildings and supporting infrastructure 
• Installation of all mechanical and electrical systems required for plant operation
