Hartlepool Segment Factory

Developed by repurposing a 45,000 m² oil rig fabrication site, the STRABAG Hartlepool Segment Factory is the most advanced segment factory in the world with excellent transportation links by sea, road and rail. The factory will deliver over 83,000 precast concrete segments for HS2’s London tunnels, having won a contract to supply the Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV) in October 2021.

Environmental and social responsibility

By repurposing and restoring existing infrastructure, we ensure that the production and transportation of segments at the Hartlepool Segment Factory has a minimal impact on the environment. The project also demonstrates STRABAG’s long-term commitment to manufacturing in the north-east of England and this project has created over 100 jobs for local people.
 
The automation and robotics used in the factory reduce steel reinforcement wastage to negligible volumes, resulting in a significantly better energy efficiency. The project also utilises the local supply chain, sourcing aggregate from local quarries and using UK recycled steel.
 
Having direct access to the rail network creates a more sustainable solution in the way that we transport tunnel segments and will allow a total of 56,000 lorry journeys to be avoided in the transportation of the over 83,000 segments for the HS2 project.
