Chile
Situated at an altitude of 2,830 m in the heart of the Atacama Desert, 240 km from the port city of Antofagasta, the Chuquicamata copper mine, one of the largest open pit mines, is undergoing a transition to an underground operation, which will extend the mine’s lifespan by at least 40 years.
Material is extracted by controlled fracturing of the rock using gravity, a technique known as block caving.
The Chuquicamata CC-010 Project involves 3,040 m of horizontal development, 1,155,010 tonne-km of marina extraction, and 7,024 m³ of excavation for ditches and excavation.
