Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Infrastructure – Package 1

Tanzania

STRABAG International GmbH was awarded the contract for rehabilitation and extension of the bus rapid transit infrastructure (BRT = a surface metro system that uses bus technology to provide metro-like services) in Dar Es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, with a contract value of € 179.6 million. The works comprised the rehabilitation and extension of three trunk roads with a total length of 21.1 km.

The contract was part of the Second Central Transport Corridor Project, the purpose of which was to support Tanzania’s economic growth by providing enhanced transport facilities. Its main components are the Dar Es Salaam urban transport system, the trunk roads and Zanzibar Airport.

The works in Package 1 were implemented under two lots. Lot 1 contained the rehabilitation and extension of the road from Magomeni to Kimara including 15 bus stations, the Kimara Terminal and the Ubongo Terminal. Lot 2 comprised the route from Magomeni to Kivukoni as well as Kawawa Road from Magomeni to Morocco Terminal and Msimbazi Road from Fire to Kariakoo including 14 bus stations and Morocco Terminal as well as the widening of a bridge. The tender provided the construction of one axial concrete paved carriageway for each direction serving exclusively for bus transport. The existing road was widened in order to keep the mixed traffic lanes and to include the new cycle routes and walkways. Bus stations had to be built in the roadway at 500 m to 700 m intervals, and the Kimara, Ubungo and Morocco terminals had to be enlarged. Also provided were infrastructure works for drinking water supply, sewer systems, telecommunications, street lighting and traffic signs.

In June 2017, one year after Dar es Salaam became East Africa’s first city to implement a BRT system, the Tanzanian capital was awarded the 2017 Sustainable Transport Award given annually by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, a global non-profit advocacy organisation.
