STRABAG to modernise major transport axis in Oman for around 100 million euros
- Extensive expansion of the 18th of November and Al Mouj roads in Muscat
- Complex construction project with flyovers, underpasses and traffic light-controlled junctions
- STRABAG underlines presence in Oman with new Group headquarters
STRABAG Oman LLC has been awarded the contract to widen the centrally located 18th of November and Al Mouj roads in Muscat - a key project to improve the transportation infrastructure in the capital of Oman. The construction project, commissioned by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, includes the widening of the road named after the birthday of Oman's late Sultan Qaboos bin Said to three lanes, the construction of flyovers and underpasses and the conversion of several traffic circles into traffic light-controlled intersections. This will relieve congestion on the city's main arterial road, improve connections to Muscat International Airport, Sultan Qaboos Highway or Muscat Expressway, for example, and increase safety along the route.
The project is 8.7 kilometers long and will be completed in 30 months from January 2026. The contract value is around 102 million euros. As the general contractor, STRABAG Oman is not only responsible for the execution, but also for part of the planning. The work will be carried out without disrupting traffic with temporary detour.
The construction of the STRABAG headquarters in the west of Muscat is planned for an investment sum of 12.4 million euros. The building design envisages a gross floor area of around 7,500 m² on five levels. The first two floors will mainly serve as a parking garage with 57 parking spaces, while the upper floors will house modern office space for around 150 workstations. In terms of design, the building impresses with a harmonious interplay of three façade types: a plastered perforated façade, a post-and-beam construction with glass elements and a traditional mashrabiyya, which provides light and privacy in Islamic architecture. Completion is scheduled for spring 2027.
STRABAG has been active in the Middle East region since the 1970s - initially in Oman and later also in the United Arab Emirates. Today, STRABAG employs around 3,000 people in the region and most recently generated an annual output of around 260 million euros with an order backlog of around 500 million euros. In Abu Dhabi, STRABAG is currently implementing the prestigious "Sea La Vie" project, recently completed the modernization of the Al Ain Museum and is working on major infrastructure projects in Oman, including the new road link from Duqm Airport to Ras Markaz.
