Extension of Vienna's Metro Line U2

Austria

Vienna’s largest public transport infrastructure project

The U2 extension is part of the U2xU5 underground extension, one of the largest infrastructure and climate protection projects currently underway in Vienna. As part of the project STRABAG is constructing two new metro tunnels and four underground stations between Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Neubaugasse.

A major milestone was reached in July 2026 with the completion of the second tunnel breakthrough at Augustinplatz. The tunnel boring machine “Debohra” successfully completed both tunnel tubes after driving approximately 2 kilometres beneath the densely built-up urban area of Vienna.

The works are being carried out by the joint venture ARGE U2/17-21. The project demonstrates STRABAG’s expertise in mechanised tunnelling and the delivery of complex underground infrastructure in an inner-city environment.

Scope of Work

  • Construction of two U2 metro tunnel tubes
  • Excavation using the tunnel boring machine (TBM)
  • Construction of four new underground stations
  • Installation of tunnel lining segments (tubbings)
  • Construction of emergency exits and associated underground structures
  • Tunnel works beneath a densely populated urban environment
  • Delivery of a key section of Vienna’s expanding metro network
