Microtunnelling for a reliable drinking water supply
Located on the coast of Western Australia, the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant is a key infrastructure project supporting the water supply. The facility is situated near Binningup and was designed and constructed by the Southern Seawater Alliance (SSWA) on behalf of the Water Corporation.
To deliver the underground shore crossing tunnelling solutions required for the project, SSWA selected ZÜBLIN based on its extensive international tunnelling expertise and its previous involvement in a Water Corporation project. Pipe jacking works for each tunnel were carried out from onshore launch shafts, enabling the construction of the underground connections.
In December 2011, ZÜBLIN Australia was awarded the prestigious “Tunnelling Project of the Year 2011” at an international awards ceremony in Hong Kong. Earlier that year, the project had also received the CCF Earth Award 2011 in Western Australia. As a result, ZÜBLIN earned two major industry awards within a single year in recognition of its tunnelling achievements.
