Renovation of the Al Ain Museum
The project includes the renovation of the existing buildings of the Al Ain Museum (built in 1974), the restoration, interpretation and presentation of the Sultan Fort (built in 1910) as well as the planning and construction of a complementary extension - the New Museum - and the design of the outdoor facilities.
Scope of the work
The Al Ain Museum as a modern heritage site of Abu Dhabi, revealing the World Heritage Site of Al Ain; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is undertaking the redevelopment of the Al Ain Museum, adjacent to the central district of Al Ain (Wasat Madinat) and bordering the Al Ain Oasis to the east.
Over the past two years, archaeological finds have been discovered on the museum site that date back to periods rarely seen in Abu Dhabi and make an important contribution to the extensive history of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The conservation of the Al Ain Museum and Sultan Fort includes the following components:
- The refurbishment of the existing buildings of the Al Ain Museum, which were built in the 1970s, including the restoration and redesign of the museum's exhibition galleries.
- The restoration, interpretation and presentation of the Sultan Fort, built in 1910, including an adaptive reuse compatible with its significant values and UNESCO World Heritage status
- The planning and construction of a new museum building - as a supplementary extension to the existing museum - to create additional space for permanent and temporary exhibitions, collection storage, study areas, a restoration laboratory, administration rooms and sales and service facilities.
