Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Advanced Tunneling Contract 2
Canada
The Canadian subsidiary of publicly listed construction group STRABAG has been awarded a contract to design and build the eastern underground segment of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, a seven-station, 9.2-kilometre extension of future Eglinton Crosstown LRT service. The project will create a continuous rapid transit line that will run from Toronto’s east end, through the heart of the city, and west to the neighbouring community of Mississauga. The approx. € 175 million (CAD $255 million) contract is being executed under a Design Build Finance model, with major construction work expected to begin later in 2024.
“We are pleased to bring our global expertise to help the Province of Ontario expand its rapid transit network, benefitting the local community and businesses. Our participation in the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will further strengthen STRABAG’s expertise and proficiency in the Canadian market. Our involvement builds upon our successful collaboration on the Highway 401 Rail Tunnel project, further solidifying our business relationships within the region,” says Gerhard Urschitz, member of the board STRABAG AG.
Contract model insures best value for the province
STRABAG was awarded the contract by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx through a public procurement process. Evaluation criteria included design and construction methodology, approach to project management, and the collaborative behaviours of key individuals of the team.
The 500-metre tunnel will provide a critical connection between the future terminus of Eglinton Crosstown LRT service at Mount Dennis Station and the elevated portion of the extension. The contract includes one launch shaft, one extraction shaft, and a temporary bi-directional cycle track. The tunnelling works will be performed using sequential excavation method.
