Expanding Toronto’s wastewater infrastructure capacity
STRABAG’s Canadian subsidiary was awarded the contract for the construction of key underground infrastructure for the new Ashbridges Bay Integrated Pumping Station in Toronto. The project forms part of a major programme to increase the city’s wastewater capacity during heavy rainfall events and to improve water quality in Toronto’s waterways and Lake Ontario.
The works include the construction of deep concrete shafts, underground chambers and connecting tunnels that will enable wastewater to be conveyed to the Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant.
A central element of the project is the construction of two large-diameter shafts, one extending to a depth of sixty-eight metres with a diameter of twenty-seven metres and a second reaching a depth of twenty-seven metres with a diameter of thirty-two metres. Together with five additional shafts, the project comprises a total shaft depth of one hundred and fifty-three metres.
The shafts are connected by feeder tunnels with a combined length of four hundred and forty-five metres. The works also include a rock tunnel section and a parallel pressure pipeline constructed within a near-surface open-cut excavation.
