The Canadian subsidiary of the listed construction group STRABAG has been awarded the contract for the design and construction of the eastern underground section of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, a 9.2 km extension of the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT line with seven stops. The contract, worth approximately € 175 million (CAD 255 million), will be executed under a design-build-finance model. The main construction work is expected to begin in 2024.
"We are pleased to be able to use our global expertise to help the province of Ontario expand its mass transit network, which will particularly benefit the local population and businesses. Our participation builds on our successful collaboration on the Highway 401 rail tunnel project and strengthens our business relationships in the region," says Gerhard Urschitz, Member of the Executive Board of STRABAG AG.
Contract model guarantees best value for the province.STRABAG was awarded the contract by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx through a public tender process. Evaluation criteria included the design and construction methodology, the approach to project management and the collaboration of key team members.
The 500-meter tunnel will provide a vital link between the future terminus of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT at the Mount Dennis stop and the elevated portion of the line. The contract also includes a launch shaft, a winding shaft and a temporary cycleway in both directions. The tunnel excavation work will be carried out using the sequential excavation method.
The 9.2 km extension will run from the future Mount Dennis LRT stop to Renforth Drive. This will create a continuous rapid transit line extending from east Toronto through the city center to the neighboring community of Mississauga.
